Americans drive 3 trillion miles annually (approx. 8 billion miles daily). At a cost of $0.50/mile, we are spending $1.5 trillion each year, 80% of which arises from single occupancy vehicles. This is economically inefficient, wastes energy, causes traffic congestion, and puts greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. Americans send more than $300 billion dollars abroad each year on net oil imports (CNN-Money, 2008).
TripVerde’s goal is to profitably reduce daily vehicle miles traveled by 10% (800 million miles) within 10 years. As an initial step towards this goal, TripVerde is launching AirportShareACab, an international (currently in the US and Canada), flat-fee based service that matches travelers, allowing them to share a cab to and from airports. If successful, this service will within five years eliminate 300,000 miles traveled daily, save consumers $116 million annually and reduce annual carbon emissions by 39,000 tons.
